Ube Bubble Tea
Bubble Tea has so many different names! Milk Tea, Boba Tea.. whatever you want to call it..its REALLY good and addicting. For those of us with dietary restrictions or allergies, ordering it out is basically impossible. I feel pretty awful if I eat Dairy or Sugar so bubble tea has been a thing of the past for me- until THIS WEEK.
It crossed my mind to create a whole collection of Bubble Tea Recipes- all with directions including Dairy & Sugar Free options. This is the first of what I hope becomes many recipes to make and enjoy bubble tea at home.
Taro bubble tea is a popular flavor- and most people dont know that the taro root is very closely related to the Ube Sweet Potato! They have a similar flavor profile- only I find Ube to have a bit more sweetness to it and the color is a darker purple.
Finding Taro or Ube in American grocery stores however can be challenging. It sometimes can be found in asian supermarkets- but those are not always an option in every city. So, I looked for something available to order on amazon to keep things as simple as possible.
Enter Ube Extract. I found it on amazon and it tastes JUST LIKE the real thing. Snag a bottle for yourself and youll be good to go- and you can make batch after batch of this delicious bubble tea
All you will need- is an unsweetened Dairy Free Creamy Milk of Choice. Ube extract, Boba Pearls, Honey or Agave OR a Sugar Free form of honey. I have several favorite brands. This one for a cleaner ingredient option try this one. If you order more than one bottle at a time the price will start to drop. I usually buy 6 or 12 at a time and they last me a good 6-8 months.
You’ll also need & Stevia or Monk Fruit Drops!
I have found that mixing two different sugar free sweeteners really gives a well rounded taste that mimics that taste and sweetness level of sugar EXACTLY. If you are using honey or agave- that is all you will need.
Yes, these ingredients are a little spendy if you are going the sugar free route- but they will last!! You’ll be able to make many batches of boba tea!
OH and dont forget to order your boba straws!!
Most websites I have found recommend that you eat your boba within 4 hours of making it. As it cools itll begin to get hard on the inside and will no longer have that lovely chewy texture. While I do agree with this- I have also found that if you warm the boba back up even after being in the fridge for a day or two it goes right back to being chewy. Its not QUITE as good as the original texture but its still enjoyable. I just throw it in the microwave in a cup for 30-60 seconds and its good to go and ready for another drink.
