Gluten Free Bacon Green Bean Casserole!

This recipe is spectacular! It'll make a green bean casserole lover out of anyone!! This is comfort food in every way shape and form and it deserves a spot on every Thanksgiving table.

This is nothing like the cream of mushroom soup casserole that is often served. It takes things up about 100 notches- with beautiful depth of flavor in the creamy rich gravy & the crispiest crunchiest gluten free French onions piled on top. I will never make it any other way.

The recipe is vegan outside of the bacon (as long as you also opt for vegan butter!) It’ll taste equally delicious if you make it meat free!

My version of green bean casserole has a rich caramelized onion , creamy garlic gravy! My husband will not touch mushrooms (and I’m funny about them myself if Im being honest) so I did omit them from the recipe.

However if you are a die hard mushroom fan by all means throw them in!! They can be sautéed up in the butter. I would throw them into the skillet after the onions have caramelized. Then after the onions have some color you can add all the wet ingredients to make the gravy.

If you make this recipe using my Homemade French Onions- you will have more than enough onions to really pile them high into the casserole dish with the gravy and green beans.

For the gluten free flour- I went with King Arthur Measure for Measure flour. But I think you can safely use just about any all purpose flour blend since it is only 1.5 tbsp total!

It takes things up about 100 notches- with beautiful depth of flavor in the creamy rich gravy & the crispiest crunchiest gluten free French onions piled on top. Ingredients

  • 2.5 Tbsp Butter (Regular or Vegan)
  • 1 Large Onion (Finely Chopped)
  • 8 Cloves Garlic Minced (8 dorot cubes saves time!)
  • 1 Tsp Thyme (Fresh or Dried)
  • 1/2 Tsp Black Pepper
  • 1/2 Tsp Salt (Or more to taste)
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp King Arthur Measure for Measure Gluten Free Flour
  • 2 Cups Heavy Cream Or Coconut Cream
  • 1/2- 3/4 cup water
  • 3 tsp/ or 3 cubes or Chicken OR Mushroom flavored Bouillon
  • 12 Oz Bacon
  • 24 Ounces French Fresh Green Beans
  • Gluten Free French Fried Onions (Measure with your heart).

Instructions

  1. Add to a pot or a large deep frying pan the butter and the chopped onion. Stir in the minced garlic. Sauce over medium low heat until the onions are becoming caramelized. (This takes about 15 minutes). Be patient and stir often- its worth the wait!
  2. Add in the thyme, salt pepper and gluten free flour. Stirring well and cook another minute or two.
  3. Pour in the cream, water and bouillon. Stir well- heating up allowing it to simmer into a gravy. (Note: If at any point the gravy gets thicker than you prefer- water can be added).
  4. While the Gravy is cooking: Cook the bacon in a separate skillet until crispy & Steam the green beans until fork tender in another pot. Drain the excess fat from the bacon on a paper towel and strain the green beans.
  5. Steam the green beans in large pot with water until fork tender. Drain and set aside.
  6. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  7. Chop the crispy bacon. Add about 2/3 of it to the gravy. (Reserving the rest for the top of the casserole). When the gravy is finished cooking- add the green beans to the gravy pot and stir to coat the green beans.
  8. Pour the green beans and gravy into a casserole dish. Add a nice layer of fried French onions (The quantity is up to you!) I load mine up pretty substantially since the onions are everyones favorite part. Sprinkle the remaining bacon on top.
  9. Bake for 25-35 minutes until the gravy is bubbling and the topping has gotten a little more golden color. Serve hot!

Notes

This casserole can be assembled in advance and placed in the fridge covered. If doing this- I would just hold off on the baking it until you are ready to serve it. The oven really helps crisp up the onions to make them extra delicious.
