Gluten Free/Vegan Extra Crispy French Fried Onions!
Fried Onions are DELICIOUS! They are by and far the best part of green bean casserole.
While yes- you can absolutely find gluten free French fried onions (natures basket for example sells a gluten free version). I feel like they are overly expensive and not always easy to track down. Making your own is really simple and luckily they can be made ahead. You can fry them up several days in advance if using them for a casserole and they will stay nice and crispy. You can also just use them for salad or eating them as a snack.
Plus I have found when you sprinkle them over a casserole and then bake it- they get extra crispy all over again in the oven!
There is some flexibility with this recipe!
Typically I provide an exact frying temperature but I found with these onions that a pretty big range in temperature worked great. I just turn the heat on medium and let the oil heat up for a bit while I batter the onions.
I selected Better Batter Original Gluten Free Flour Blend- as It has a little higher quantity of xanthan gum compared to other brands that I have tried- as a result it has good “sticking” abilities. So I knew it would cling nicely to the onions. However I suspect when a lot of all purpose blends will work. So if you want to give it a whirl with another brand I think you will still have success.
The potato flour is my secret weapon when it comes to extra crispy recipes! It adds another level of crunch that no other flour can compete with. Just note that potato flour and potato starch are different ingredients. If you don’t want to bother with the potato flour- that is ok your French onions will still turn out great.
Gluten Free/ Vegan French Onions
Ingredients
- 3 White Medium/Large Onions Sliced into thin strips
- 2 Cups Better Batter Gluten Free Flour (Original Blend)
- 2 Tbsp Potato Flour (Not starch) * This is optional but it adds some extra crispiness.
- 1 Tbsp Garlic Powder
- 2 Tsp Salt
- 1/2 Tsp Pepper
- 1 Tsp Paprika
- 1 Cup Buttermilk OR for dairy free 1 Cup Coconut Cream + 1 Tbsp Vinegar
- Oil for Frying
Instructions
- Add 4-6 inches of oil into a heavy bottomed pot or deep skillet. (Cast iron works best). Turn the heat to medium on your stove allowing it to slowly warm up while prepping the onions.
- Add to a medium bowl all of the dry ingredients: Flour, Garlic Powder, Salt,Pepper and Paprika mix well and set aside.
- Thinly Slice the onions adding them to another med/large bowl. Pour the buttermilk over the mixing them well so they are fully coated.
- Take handfuls at a time of the buttermilk covered onions- allowing them to drip (you don't want excess liquid on them). Adding them to the bowl of flour/spices and covering the onions. Depending on the size of your pot- you will want to fry either half at a time or do 3 rounds of fried onions. Fry them until they are super crispy and a beautiful golden brown color. Place them on a paper towel lined plate to drain excess oil. I fried each batch for about 10 minutes.
- Once cooled store the onions in a sealed container either in the fridge or at room temperature.
